What to Use Before Makeup
Foundation that pills, concealer that creases, makeup that disappears by noon — most of these problems aren't makeup problems. They're skincare problems wearing a different costume.
Cleanse, then wait
Always start with a clean face — but never apply skincare to skin that's still damp from cleansing if you're heading into makeup. The water under your products evaporates during the day and pulls product with it.
Cleanse, pat dry gently, and give your skin 60 seconds before the next step.
Hydration is non-negotiable
Dry skin grabs and clings to pigment unevenly. A layer of hyaluronic acid or a hydrating essence under your moisturizer is the single most reliable fix for makeup that looks patchy. Apply, wait, then moisturize.
The right moisturizer changes everything
Heavy moisturizers under makeup are a recipe for sliding. Lightweight, fast-absorbing formulas work better. If you have dry skin and need richness, apply your richer cream at night and use a lighter version in the morning before makeup.
SPF: yes, even under makeup
SPF is the most-skipped, most-important step. Mineral sunscreens layer best under makeup because they sit on top of skin rather than absorbing in like chemical filters. Choose one without high silicone content if your makeup tends to pill.
The 15-minute rule
The biggest mistake: applying foundation immediately after sunscreen. Sunscreen needs 10-15 minutes to settle into a film on the skin. Brush your teeth, make coffee, do your hair — anything to put time between SPF and foundation. Your makeup will sit completely differently.
